Prominent members of the American Congress sent a letter to the Ambassador of Brazil in the United States, Sérgio do Amaral, expressing their “deep concern regarding the current state of democracy and human rights in Brazil”. There are some members of the House Judiciary Committee among the representatives who have subscribed the letter.

The letter makes explicit reference to the “violations of former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s due process rights” and to “the persecution of former President Lula da Silva in ways that violate international treaty obligations, such as those stipulated under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), guaranteeing basic due process rights to all individuals”.

The document also mentions the several arbitrary actions taken by Judge Sérgio Moro against Lula, and states that the he “has not even feigned impartiality” in his conduction of the lawsuits involving the former President.
